A Local’s Guide to Fall in Auburn & Opelika

Local Notes from Cile Howell • Updated September 17, 2026

Fall around Auburn and Opelika doesn’t arrive all at once.

Football season starts while it still feels very much like Alabama summer. Then evenings slowly get better, outdoor events start filling the calendar, pumpkins show up, and eventually there is that stretch of weather when everyone suddenly remembers how nice it is to be outside.

Here are a few things on my radar for fall 2026.

Football weekends change the rhythm of Auburn

You do not have to be inside Jordan-Hare to know when Auburn has a home game.

Traffic changes. Restaurants get busier. Tailgates appear. Friends and alumni come back into town. Parts of Auburn that feel fairly normal during the week suddenly have a completely different energy.

This year there are also several new things happening around campus, from Tiger Walk Plaza and expanded pregame activities to new dining and stadium options, so even people who have done Auburn football weekends for years may find something different.

Downtown Opelika has its own fall calendar

One reason I like fall here is that Auburn football doesn’t have to be the only plan.

Food Truck Friday is scheduled for downtown Opelika on September 18 from 5–9 p.m., with additional dates on the calendar later in the fall.

Then on October 9, Opelika Main Street’s On the Tracks brings wine, shopping and live music to Historic Downtown Opelika beginning at 6 p.m.

Those kinds of nights are a good reminder that fall around here can look completely different depending on which side of town you spend it on.

Pumpkin season starts at the end of September

The Farm at Rocky Top Pumpkin Patch is scheduled to open for weekends beginning September 26 and continue through October 31 this year.

In addition to pumpkins, the farm lists wagon rides, animals, inflatables, games, a little train, a jump pad, concessions and plenty of fall photo opportunities.

It is definitely one of those places where the calendar may say fall before the temperature agrees.

Fall is also a good time to do the ordinary things outside

Some of my favorite fall days are not attached to an event at all.

Walk downtown. Eat outside once the humidity finally cooperates. Go antique shopping. Take a longer walk than you would willingly take in July. Spend an afternoon around Auburn or Opelika without necessarily needing a big itinerary.

That is probably the part of fall here that is hardest to put on an events calendar.

Football gets most of the attention — and understandably so — but fall in Auburn and Opelika is really a mix of college-town energy, small local events and finally having weather that makes you want to stay outside a little longer.

Event dates and details can change. Check the organizer’s current event page before heading out.
